iTIC Hosts Inaugural SUMO Workshop to Advance Urban Mobility

On April 2, 2026, the Intelligent Traffic Information Center Foundation (iTIC) held its 1st SUMO Workshop at the Foundation’s office. The primary objectives were to promote the integration of traffic data with simulation models and to establish a network of professionals capable of leveraging these tools for advanced applications.

What is SUMO?

SUMO (Simulation of Urban Mobility) is a widely recognized open-source software used by academics and traffic engineers to assist in decision-making, urban planning, and real-time operations. The key capabilities of SUMO include:

  • Universal Modeling: The ability to create simulations for any area across Thailand.

  • Data Integration: Seamlessly working with iTIC data to visualize and monitor traffic conditions.

  • Safety Planning: Identifying high-risk areas and accident hotspots within simulations to compare with real-world data for preventive planning.

  • Environmental Impact: Forecasting pollution levels and greenhouse gas emissions generated by the transportation sector.

  • Traffic Light Optimization: Helping to configure traffic signal cycles based on field data to achieve optimized waiting times.

Expert-Led Collaboration

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Passakon Prathombutr and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sorawit Narupiti. During the event, Mr. Ninnart Chaithirapinyo shared a strategic roadmap for driving the collaborative use of SUMO to benefit society, with a specific focus on enhancing urban livability.
